KEVIN TODD
Seneca Valley Senior collects books for students in need
“I’ve always loved reading. Kids can really benefit from this campaign.”
When Kevin Todd, a senior at Seneca Valley High School, was brainstorming ideas for his senior project, his love of reading and his father’s connections to United Way of Southwestern PA through his job at KPMG seemed like a natural fit. That’s how Kevin became involved with United Way’s 100,000 Books campaign.
“Kids reading at grade level by the end of 3rd grade are four times more likely to graduate high school,” Kevin said. “That’s why this campaign is so important for our community.”
Kevin’s book drive started in October and wrapped up in March. He was able to raise over $1500 through a MyUnitedWay fundraiser. He also collected new books throughout the drive, donating a total of 674 books to the Bradley Center in Robinson Township. The mission of the center is to improve the lives of children, youth and families affected by trauma, mental illness, and behavioral health challenges. The books will be placed in the center’s library and distributed to children grades K-12.
“I was surprised by how easy it was to collect the books,” Kevin said. “I emailed everyone I knew and asked them to donate or spread the word.”
Kevin is graduating high school this year and will attend Ohio University in the fall with a major in business. He would like to continue hosting book drives, and would encourage other community members to get involved.
“The best part was watching all the donations come in,” Kevin said. “I know the kids will really benefit from the books.”
The 100,000 Books Campaign is a partnership between United Way of Southwestern PA and KPMG in an effort to provide reading, learning and relationship-building opportunities to help students in under-served areas work toward positive academic and personal futures.
