REGINA SCOTT
A brilliant career built upon the desire to create social change.
- Why have you chosen to make Southwest PA your home?
I was born and raised in West Mifflin. Over the years, I realized that I enjoy living in Southwestern, PA, despite the challenges of being a Black woman in this region. I chose to stay because I believe that I can make an impact and help to make the region a more livable city for all.
- How did you choose the career you’re in today?
Several family members encouraged me to consider accounting, as there was a lot of opportunity for Black women who were able to master both the technical and networking aspects of the profession. As a result, I studied accounting at Duquesne University and began my professional career as a public accountant with “Big 5” accounting firm KPMG, LLP. While I no longer work directly in accounting, these skills have been critical to my professional success.
- What other career opportunities have been meaningful to you?
I launched a nearly 17-year career of service-focused and impact-driven leadership with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Department of Human Services. I directed eligibility determination and benefits delivery of Medicaid, SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), LIHEAP (Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program) and other state administered programs. I loved helping underserved and under-resourced individuals and families.
- What do you love most about your job? I am the Director of Community Engagement and Programs at Highmark Wholecare (formerly Gateway Health). I develop Highmark Wholecare’s community outreach strategies and initiatives. My team and I provide high-quality fun and interactive educational programming to increase overall health-related literacy. I love the fact that I can help improve lives—mitigating the social determinants of health and enabling people to become effective advocates of their own health and wellbeing.
- What are some of your hobbies or favorite things to do outside of work?
I love to travel, read, listen to music, and create vision boards. I believe in self-care and
- Why do you volunteer with United Way?
I volunteer through the United Way to work alongside others who are not only philanthropic, but also share my desire to drive greater social change. I am able to further causes that I am passionate about while making good use of my knowledge, time, and resources. I love giving the gift of service!
