TIESHA’S STORY

Tiesha was in her kitchen at the end of a long workday. Outside the rain had turned to snow. It was almost Thanksgiving. Her son’s thirteenth birthday was coming and she smiled, thinking of his long wish list. She was looking forward to the holidays. Twelve hours later, she was homeless.
The roof on her house had collapsed through her bedroom ceiling. Water, plaster, and rubble fell all night. In the morning, officials told Tiesha that she and her son had to leave; the property was uninhabitable. In less than a day, Tiesha lost her home and almost everything she owned.
With so many other expenses, Tiesha couldn’t afford the upfront costs of new housing. Safe At Home, a program funded by United Way’s United for Women initiative, helped Tiesha with a grant that covered most of her first month’s rent and security deposit.

United for Women helped Tiesha get her life back on track. “I was devastated, and they were true to their word. I appreciate it so much.”
