Sheryl received a lot of support growing up and was personally able to see the importance of philanthropy and its impact. As a child, she had a mentor who provided a fresh perspective and inspired her.

“I had a great childhood and my parents did all that they could for me. Having a mentor brought new and different experiences to my life,” shared Sheryl.

In 2016, Sheryl Nunn received the YWCA Rising Star award which honors women age 35 or younger who have been successful in their career have and helped others, particularly women and girls. The award is sponsored by United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council and provides a scholarship for professional development and a one-year WLC membership.

Sheryl saw the impact of United Way and decided to become an official member of the WLC, where she’s in a position to be a mentor and help others.

“In my first year as a WLC member, it was eye-opening to see so many women in key leadership roles,” Sheryl reflected. “And it made me want to support other women and help them see the same opportunities for themselves.”

In September, Sheryl volunteered for United Way’s Day of Caring in Westmoreland County.  She participated in one of 75 projects that helped 100,000 people that day. These volunteer opportunities provide first-hand insight into how important it is to give back.”

“Being a part of the WLC has helped me grow as an individual, an employee, and as a member of the community. There’s tremendous value in getting involved in the community – you get to touch someone’s life,” Sheryl said.
