Covestro has been involved with United Way’s Adopt-a-School program from the very beginning, adopting Sto-Rox Elementary School nearly two and a half years ago.

“It think it’s great to have a multi-year partnership with the same school,” said Rebecca Lucore, head of sustainability and corporate social responsibility, Covestro Americas Region, and Adopt-a-School volunteer. “We’ve watched these kids grow up a little bit over the past couple of years.”

Through the program, more than 75 Covestro employees spend time with Sto-Rox Elementary students. Since Covestro has a STEM focus, volunteers work with teachers to bring exciting science experiments into the classroom on a regular basis.

Covestro has also organized school supply drives, given the school’s library a make-over, helped students’ parents with career development, taken the kids on field trips and more. The kids have even visited Covestro for environmental and science lessons at the company’s outdoor campus, which is wildlife certified.

“Our employees love it,” Rebecca said. “The kids know the Covestro people. Building this relationship has been so great for the students, teachers and our employees.”

Rebecca encourages other local companies to ‘Adopt-a-School.’ “It’s a great way to get involved with the community. Look at some volunteer work you might already be doing and see if you might be able to take that into a school—it could make all the difference.”
