Walt’s Story
Paying Success Forward
Army veteran Walt, once homeless and unemployed, found stable housing and retooled his job skills with help from a United Way partner agency that serves ex-soldiers. Walter needed a job next, and had lined up some promising interviews, but he couldn’t afford to get to them, until he received a bus pass through United Way’s Veterans Transportation Assistance Campaign. “I would never have been able to make it otherwise,” he says. “Now I’m gainfully employed. I have a great job.”
When one of his new co-workers offered him a ride to work every day, Walter returned his unused bus passes so another struggling veteran might succeed like he has. “To give them back is helping another veteran,” he says.
