“When I joined United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council, it just felt like I’d found my spot.”

When Claire Zangerle moved to Pittsburgh to begin her new job as chief nurse executive at Allegheny Health Network in September 2016, she was anxious to get involved with United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council.

As a long-time Cleveland resident, Claire was extremely involved in their local chapter of the Women’s Leadership Council, so she was well aware of the incredible impact women can make when they work together on a cause. “Joining Cleveland’s WLC really filled my philanthropic needs. I was giving my time, talent and treasure, while also meeting women and networking. Together, we were filling needs in our community,” Claire explained.

Now, just one year after moving to Pittsburgh, Claire has immersed herself in the work of the local WLC. “Our focus here in Pittsburgh is helping women get back on their feet after a setback through United Way’s United for Women initiative,” Claire said.

In addition to helping other women, Claire also appreciates that United Way looks at the community’s needs holistically.

Claire appreciates that WLC provides opportunities for both professional and personal growth, and allows her to meet women from all throughout the community. “It’s such an inclusive group – it’s a warm environment. You walk in, and you’re not standing by yourself for more than a minute,” Claire remarked.

In her first year, Claire has co-chaired a strategic meeting session for next year’s United for Women efforts. She’s gone to various volunteer events, and will also participate as a speaker at this year’s WLC Breakfast on September 14.

Claire encourages other women searching for a philanthropic opportunity to get involved. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to combine a passion for helping others; giving your expertise; and meeting a bunch of wonderful women from all walks of life and businesses that you probably would never have met before in your own every day activity,” Claire said.
